Council gets asked to support 20mph zones
A COUNCIL is to be asked to revise its policy on speed restrictions in residential streets.
On Thursday, Suffolk County Council will be asked to support a Green Party initiative to implement speed limits of 20mph in areas of Suffolk where communities have requested them.
Mark Ereira-Guyer, Green councillor for Suffolk County Council, said: “This isn’t about telling people what to do, it’s about having the county council listen to people who want to make their streets safer.
“If people want to reclaim a space for themselves and their community, then the county council should respond by making that happen.”
Aimed at improving the safety of, in particular children, older pedestrians and cyclists, Cllr Ereira-Guyer said, where implemented, the scheme could also save motorists fuel and benefit the environment by lowering emissions and pollution levels.
The motion being put to the council asks it to ‘support, help fund and actively engage with communities, local resident and other civic amenity groups and town and parish councils across Suffolk in their requests for speed limits of 20mph in residential areas’.
It says the scheme is ‘designed as community-generated actions to make local streetscapes safer, particularly for children, older pedestrians and cyclists, and more tranquil places where community life can flourish and air pollution be reduced’.
Residents in Southgate Street, Bury St Edmunds, Bildeston and Stowmarket are among those to have made such requests.
