Construction firm tops out a good job
A MILDENHALL construction firm has celebrated a £2 million project with a traditional topping-out ceremony.
Cocksedge was contracted by Cambridge University to convert a historic terrace in Jesus Lane, Cambridge, into 20 en-suite rooms and six self-contained flats to be used by graduate students studying at Jesus College.
Cocksedge celebrated the completion of work on the exterior of the buildings, which has included facade and roof repairs, window restoration and hard landscaping, with a traditional topping-out ceremony.
The ceremony was performed by the Master of Jesus College, Professor Ian White, with Steve Nugent, construction director of Cocksedge, the subcontractors, design team and members of the college.
Mr Nugent said: “A topping-out is an age-old ritual designed to shield the buildings from harm, in our case, the ceremony marks the completion of the refurbishment of the exterior of the buildings, which will provide students with a custom-made space in which to live.”
Cocksedge will now complete work to the interior of the buildings, which will be handed over to the university in September.
A spokesman for Cocksedge said: “We are proud to succeed in this tough economical climate and continue to deliver high quality projects for a variety of clients,
“Being able to secure employment for local people is paramount to us and our directly employed trades include bricklayers, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, joiners and general labourers with more specialist trades being sub-contracted by the use of our approved supply chain database.”
