Concerned councillor calls for pro-active opposition

A councillor has called for a proactive stance to be taken against changes to planning legislation proposed by the Coalition Government.

The proposal is that planning laws surrounding extensions be relaxed for a period of three years.

Forest Heath district councillor Tim Huggan has said this will mean consultations are not required as long as plans conform with regulations.

Cllr Huggan raised concerns about the effect of relaxed legislation on community relations.

He said: “Since the Government came in we have been told about localism and the right of people to get involved in the community and then we have this, the one thing that will fundamentally affect people in their daily lives.

“We are taking away any democratic input into challenging whether they should go ahead.”

Cllr Huggan asked that Forest Heath District Council makes a proactive objection to the proposals.

Forest Heath district councillors voted for an alternative proposal to postpone comment until the Government’s plans became clearer and a consultation is launched.
