Community thanked for helping new free school open on time

THE head of Brandon’s new free school praised the community for rallying round to make sure it was ready for its first pupils.
Speaking at the school’s official opening today, head teacher Sherry Zand spoke of the last minute rush between getting the keys and opening at the beginning of term.
“I thought several times that come September 10 we wouldn’t be able to open,” she told assembled pupils, staff and supporters. “But it was the community spirit, the parents and staff coming in who got it ready.”
She said that 48 hours before they opened, volunteers were painting the hall and that the cleaning contractors even lent volunteers a hand after finishing their contracted work.
The school is run by the Swedish company International English Schools, which runs 19 schools with 13,300 pupils in Sweden. Brandon’s IES Breckland, in the former Breckland Middle School, is its first outside Sweden.
Its founder Barbara Bergström planted an apple tree to mark the opening and spoke of how impressed she had been at her reception there. “These young people have been so polite, so well raised, so courteous and so attentive.
“It’s a remarkable thing after only two weeks for me to notice.”
