Community hub site
is revealed

A site has been earmarked for a new Mildenhall service hub as more partners confirm their interest.

Mildenhall College, Anglia Community Leisure, which runs Mildenhall Swimming Pool and the Dome Leisure Centre, and Forest Heath District Council have confirmed their interest in pursuing a joint service hub on the former site of Riverside Middle School, in Sheldrick Way.

Forest Heath District Council leader James Waters said: “I believe the hub would put public services right at the heart of Mildenhall, creating a real buzz and sense of community spirit.”

The former school site is currently used by Mildenhall College, whose students are split across the town with older years at its Bury Road site and younger students at the Sheldrick Way site.

Buildings at the school’s Bury road site will soon require replacing.

Susan Byles, Mildenhall College headteacher, said: “Placing Mildenhall College at the centre of this exciting development would give an opportunity to provide secondary and further education at the heart of our own local community.

“It comes at a time when the college’s ambition to convert to academy status with the Academy Transformation Trust would offer the school an exciting opportunity to grow its offer of post-16 and adult education.”

Potential partners including Suffolk County Council, health and library providers and Suffolk Police have also been involved in discussions.

The hub could see leisure, education, health, council and law enforcement services brought together on one site.

A spokesman for the district council said: “Safeguarding children is of primary concern and will be factored into the site design.”

Many of the buildings currently housing the town’s services require upgrading or replacing and Cllr Waters has said it made sense to replace them all in one cheaper, modern and efficient hub.
