Community chest available in celebration
Community groups can grab a share of a £35,000 pot of cash made available to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Suffolk Housing Society.
Any society tenant working on a scheme to improve their area can bid for up to 5,000 of the total Community Chest fund, as part of a project to jump-start community projects in the area.
The money, which was originally earmarked for an anniversary conference, will now be used to fund initiatives, such as improvements to play areas, community gardens or crime prevention schemes.
Steve Clarke, chief executive of the housing society based in St Botolph's Lane, Bury St Edmunds, said: "We wanted to make sure we marked this important anniversary by doing something special which would be of direct benefit to our tenants.
"We felt it would be more appropriate in these difficult times to help community projects get off the ground."
All applications will be judged by representatives from the society's residents' group, Tenants' Voice, which was also launched this year, along with two members of the society's board.
Dinah Dorling, chairman of Tenants' Voice, said: "Tenant's Voice fully supports this initiative and is thrilled we have this opportunity to support local communities."
