College is set for new chapter
A COLLEGE will enter a new era of education when the new term starts.
Mildenhall College of Technology has been rebranded as Mildenhall College ahead of taking on two extra year groups and 55 new members of staff.
The move is part of a switch to two-tier education with the closure of the Riverside, College Heath and Breckland middle schools.
Head Susan Byles said: “It’s a new chapter for the college. There’s been a sense in the last three years that we’re a school that’s improving and moving things forward.
“We want to build on the strengths of the school. Our mission now is to continue to strive for even higher examination results and help children to find the career paths they want and be successful within life.”
The new Year 7 and 8 pupils will be taught at the former Riverside site, in Shelrick Way, which has received a £250,000 refurbishment for new classroom furniture, IT systems and to revamp changing rooms as well as the IT suite.
It follows nearly £2 million worth of investment in the main college site, in Bury Road, over the last year to fund improvements such as reroofing and replacing the heating system.
As a result of the transformation, Ms Byles said it was the ‘right time’ to rebrand the whole college with a new name, logo and signage.
There is also a new uniform, which was chosen by pupils.
She said: “We’ve rebranded as Mildenhall College. We still retain our specialisms but now we offer such a broad curriculum we felt the name Mildenhall College of Technology limited expectations.”
The new staff members include about 40 from the middle schools.
Ms Byles added that a feasibility study is being conducted at the moment to look into the possibility of rebuilding the school on one site with a new leisure centre.
