Classic sign takes pride of place

A RESTORED 1940s Guinness sign was unveiled at The Elveden Inn at 17.59 on Arthur’s Day.

The unveiling of the sign was timed to coincide with the year, 1759, that Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000 year lease on a disused brewery in St James’ Gate.

It also coincided with Arthur’s day, when Guinness is celebrated internationally.

The classic sign, designed by John Gilroy, depicts five pints of Guinness with smiling faces under a clock.

It was restored by local artist Aske Ericksson, after being found by Lord Iveagh, the direct descendent of Arthur Guinness, on eBay.

Lord Iveagh said: “We wanted to pay tribute to my forebears at the Elveden Inn with this sign, so Arthur’s Day seemed an ideal day for the toast and unveiling.

“Ashe Ericksson did a superb job of restoring the paintwork on the 1940s sign.”

The Elveden Inn, which sits on the Elveden Estate, in Thetford, has been the Guinness family home since 1894.

The classic sign has take pride of place on the side of the building.

Designer John Gilroy was also behind the Guinness for Strength campaign.
