Church group is on the move

A CHURCH group in Bury St Edmunds is hoping to move to a new premises by September, when its current lease expires.

The Potters House Christian Fellowship currently leases the first floor of the Steering Wheel Garage, in Eastgate Street, but has been looking to move for around 18 months.

Pastor, Julian Mabey, said: “We have been needing to move for a number of reasons.

“The first is, being a church group, we needed to have ground floor accommodation – where we are doesn’t have disabled access.

“We’ve also been needing to extend our children’s facilities and our youth facilities, as well, because this is quite a small premises.”

The church intends to stay within Bury and is currently in talks about the possibility of moving to an empty unit in Enterprise Park, Etna Road.

Mr Mabey said he was in the preliminary stages of seeking pre-planning advice about obtaining a change of use, because there were few places in the town licensed as places of worship.

“It’s exciting. With a better facility we’ll be able to offer more for the community –we’re fairly optimistic about it all,” he said.

Meanwhile, a planning application has been submitted to St Edmundsbury Borough Council for the premises currently leased by the church group.

The applicant, Lorna Adams, is seeking to revert its use back to a dance studio, with permission to open seven days a week, including bank holidays.
