Chris ready to run into retirement
Chris Austin who is retiring from Greene and Greene solicitors after 48 yrs
CHRIS Austin only joined solicitors Greene & Greene because there were no vacancies at the Bury Free Press.
But he must have made the right decision because he stayed at the Bury St Edmunds firm for more than 48 years and has received more than 100 cards from clients wishing him well for his retirement next Tuesday.
Chris, a former Beyton School pupil, wanted to be a journalist but when he had gained the qualifications he returned to Bury to find no vacancies.
“The Job Centre said there was a job here as a conveyancer,” he said. “I didn’t know what conveyancing was, but I went.”
When he joined in 1964, Greene & Greene had 13 partners and staff but now has about 60.
“Thing’s were much slower. When you exchanged contracts, completion would be a standard 28 days,” Chris recalled. “It wasn’t unusual for people not to have bank accounts. Somebody once brought in £50,000 in cash.”
Managing partner Chris Thomson said: “To have worked for over 48 years for the same employer is a rare achievement. Chris is the most loyal, friendly and energetic person you will ever meet.”
Chris, who has run 16 London Marathons and a New York Marathon and was secretary of St Edmunds Pacers, thinks he may revive his running career.
