Chief executives decide not to apply

THE chief executives of Forest Heath District and St Edmundbsury Borough Councils have decided not to apply for a newly-created joint post.

The decision by David Burnip, of Forest Heath, and Geoff Rivers, of St Edmundsbury, signals a new era for the two authorities, which are to share staff as part of a managerial merger.

The appointment of a new chief executive, who is due to earn £110,000, is to be confirmed by meetings of both councils on February 15.Mr Burnip currently earns £100,200 with Mr Rivers on £127,621.

In a joint statement, the pair said: “Forest Heath and St Edmundsbury are at a watershed and we have decided it is in the best interests of both organisations if they have the opportunity to appoint a joint chief executive.”

When asked about the level of redundancy pay each will receive, a spokeswoman said: “It is not possible to say at this stage what the costs will be to move from two chief executives to one, but the costs will be outweighed by savings.”
