Charities set up dementia project
THREE charities have come together to provide new services for those affected by any form of dementia.
Age UK Suffolk, Sue Ryder and Suffolk Family Carers have created the Dementia Partnership for Suffolk to offer a dedicated helpline, a team of dementia advisers and community support projects.
Louise Burrows, Age UK Suffolk’s dementia services manager, said: “The partnership is a group of charities who have come together to make joint bids when funding is available. Rather than compete, we’ve decided to combine our resources.
“Then, we’ve decided which charity is best placed to provide the services.”
Funding is mainly through a £350,000 Suffolk County Council grant, but additional funds have come from the Government’s Norfolk and Suffolk Dementia Alliance and Innovations Carers’ Network.
Jo Marshall, Sue Ryder’s development manager, said: “Raising awareness and providing information early on can help people seek help sooner and, although there are many challenges people and family carers face living with dementia, there is also a lot that can be done to support people to have a good quality of life.”
The charities say the number of people with dementia in Suffolk is expected to rise by 65 per cent from 9,870 in 2008 to 16,327 in 2025. Suffolk Family Carers alone helps more than 14,000 carers.
