Carnival bids for charitable status

Organisers of the annual Stowmarket Carnival are planning to apply for charitable status.

The carnival committee met on Wednesday night at Cedars Hotel, in Stowmarket, to discuss the application to become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO).

Funding for the 52nd carnival has been stretched this year after last year’s Saturday programme had to be cancelled due to bad weather.

The committee has now raised more than half the money it needs to put on the carnival and has a range of upcoming fund-raisers over the next month.

Carnival chairman Zoe Lynch said: “Looking at everything, we decided we ought to have charitable status.

“The carnival raises money, it is self-funded and it gives other charities and groups the opportunity to raise money on the carnival weekend. It is quite an exciting time.”

The carnival committee is holding an EGM at Cedars Hotel on Wednesday at 7pm.

Zoe said: “We are looking for new members for the committee in the hope they will become trustees eventually.

“We need to get people involved, to get an agreement on the constitution and to go for the charitable status.”

Treasurer Wendy Brame said: “The CIO is a brand new thing that came out in September time so we should be one of the first to get it.”

She said the status would make it easier for the committee to apply for grants and help with liability issues.

To raise funds, the carnival committee is holding a quiz night next Saturday (March 9) at Stowmarket Football Club, a race night at Mildenhall on March 15 and an Easter Egg Hunt at Chilton Primary School on March 30.

This year’s Stowmarket Carnival is due to take place on July 19, 20 and 21.
