Care home in Bury St Edmunds closes

A CARE home in Bury St Edmunds is currently closed to new admissions and visitors due to an outbreak of sickness and diarrhoea.

St Peter’s House, in Out Risbygate Street, cares for people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s related illnesses.

Today it’s manager Moira Clare confirmed it had closed but she would not say how long that closure had been in effect.

A spokeswoman for the Health Protection Agency said: “Health Protection Agency East of England and St Edmundsbury Borough Council has provided public health advice to St Peter’s House in Bury in relation to cases of diarrhoea and vomiting reported among residents.

“Usually at this time of the year we see outbreaks of diarrhoea and vomiting mainly caused by the winter vomiting bug called norovirus.

“The necessary public health advice has been provided to the home and we have advised the home not to take any new admissions until the cases have recovered.”

A council spokeswoman said: “St Edmundsbury environmental health officers are working with the Health Protection Agency to monitor the situation to prevent further spread of the virus.”
