Car crashes catch drink drivers

POLICE in Suffolk say that a third of failed breath tests made during a summer campaign came after the driver was involved in a crash.

The campaign was carried out throughout June.

The number of people caught over the limit was down on last year, but of the 82 positive tests, 27 (33 per cent) were from drivers who had been in a crash.

Sgt Paul Ward, of the Collision Reduction Team, said: “Driving when over the legal limit is incredibly dangerous and these results demonstrate exactly that. Those offending need to realise that they are not just putting themselves at risk but other innocent road users as well. This is a very serious issue and can have severe consequences.”

Overall, the percentage of people who failed breath tests was 8.6 per cent – down from the 21.9 per cent who failed during last summer’s campaign.
