Car chase led to farm drugs haul
When Hanif Shakeri failed to stop his car for a police patrol it led officers to cannabis with a street value of £100,000.
Shakeri drove off and two police cars were damaged in the chase which ended in a business centre, on December 13.
There, officers searched Shakeri’s BMW and found a small quantity of cannabis with £2,000 cash.
As a result of the find, police obtained a warrant and searched the caravan in which Shakeri was living at Home Farm, Stradishall together with outbuildings, Karl Voltz, prosecuting, told Ipswich Crown Court last Thursday.
The caravan contained a small quantity of cannabis with a large number of plastic bags, seven mobile phones and four sets of digital scales.
In the outbuildings the police search revealed a haul of 10kg of cannabis.
Some was packed ready for sale in small bags and the rest in bulk packages. Much was packed inside 40 sports bags.
In addition, a total of £2,300 in cash was seized.
When interviewed, Shakeri said because of a head injury he could not remember when or why he had arrived in the UK from his native Iran.
Richard Kelly, defending, said Shekeri had been forced by a man, known to him only as ‘Paddy’, to store and package the cannabis.
He said Shakeri had been beaten up by the man on a number of occasions,.
Shakeri had pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis with intent to supply, careless driving and possession of criminal property.
Judge Peter Thompson sentenced Shakeri to 12 months imprisonment and imposed a £600 fine for the careless driving offence.
Despite the sentence, Hanif Shakeri will be released immediately because he has already served 329 days on remand.
