A CHURCH is looking to speed up time with a modernising revamp of its clock.

Barton Mills Church wants to raise £2,500 to pay for a new electronically operated auto winding system.

With health and safety regulations prohibiting manaul winding of the clock – which is reached by climbing the church’s tower – the upgrade has to be made.

The Rev Roni Mechanic said the work would also prevent any repeat of the incident that saw 80-year-old Jack Sturgeon fall to his death at St Mary’s Church, in Mildenhall.

“It’s become very difficult to wind the clock so this work is needed,” he said.

He said the fund-raising was almost halfway to the total.
