Calls for signs at road blackspot
A MID Suffolk district councillor is campaigning for better safety along a Suffolk road after three serious accidents occurred in just under a year.
Green Pary councillor John Matthissen is appealing for ‘accident hotspot’ signs to be placed along Combs Lane, near Stowmarket, and has asked Suffolk Police for the accident reports for the collisions.
The accidents occurred in July and September of this year and also in October last year.
Cllr Matthissen said: “Two accidents could possibly be a coincidence, three is statistically very unlikely.
“I am concerned for my constituents who drive along that road every day.”
On July 16, a 53-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital after a serious collision in Combs Lane.
Just two months later, on September 24, a female passenger was cut from a car after a head-on collision along the same road.
On Tuesday, new ‘temporary road surface’ signs were placed down the stretch, but Cllr Matthissen says more still needs to be done.
He said: “Although it is a step in the right direction, we still need to see the accident reports to work on the safety of that road.
“Putting up a few signs is still not enough.”
Pc Stefan Henriksen, from Stowmarket Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “We are aware of complaints from local residents about speeding along Combs Lane.
“The Stowmarket Safer Neighbourhood Team will be conducting proactive speed checks and making use of the Speed Indicator Device to assess the problem,”
A Suffolk County Council spokeswoman said: “We have assessed the road and resurfacing works have been scheduled for Wednesday, October 31.
“In the meantime, warning signs have been put in place to advise drivers to take extra care when using the road.”
