Cabinet agrees to £2.1m cuts in budget
ST EDMUNDSBURY Borough Council’s cabinet has agreed the budget for 2012/2013 – which includes £2.1 million in cuts.
The cabinet met on Wednesday evening to approve the budget following a three-month public consultation.
The new budget sees an increase of 10 per cent in parking fees in Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill car parks and the introduction of parking fees at Nowton Park.
There will also be a charge for blue badge holders in off-street car parks in the area.
The council hopes to cut staff numbers and other costs by sharing services with Forest Heath District Council.
However, plans to axe the Bury’s Tourist Information Centre and to bring in a charge for using the toilets in the Abbey Gardens have been dropped.
During the public consultation, a questionnaire was sent to 2,000 homes to gauge the opinion of residents. Of these, 490 responded with another 389 online forms completed.
For the third time in four years, Council Tax will be frozen.
The council needs to save £3.5 million in the next two years and estimate saving more than £1.1 million by sharing services and management with Forest Heath District Council.
The budget will go before the full council at a meeting on February 28.
