Abbeycroft Leisure in Bury St Edmunds was among 46 Suffolk businesses to complete a programme to save carbon emissions and money.

The Low Carbon Champions initiative, led by The Green Light Trust in Lawshall and Suffolk County Council, saw small businesses cut their carbon emissions and in some cases achieve cash savings of more than £400,000, without making any capital investment.

The aim of the project was to help firms cut carbon emissions by up to 15 per cent in three years.

Each firm’s appointed a low carbon champion who was mentored to deliver a carbon reduction programme.

Firms were also given a free carbon audit providing further ideas for energy savings.

The firms gained the Suffolk Carbon Charter to promote their green credentials and gained grants totalling £75,000 towards energy improvements.

Lisa Chambers, county council cabinet member for environbment and corporate property said: “The result is not only lower emissions, but also lower costs related to energy, packaging and waste.”
