Bury St Edmunds doctor retires today

Waiting for Video...

A doctor who has worked at the same practice in Bury St Edmunds for more than 27 years will retire today.

During his time at the Angel Hill Surgery, Dr Jonathan Masters, a senior partner, also spent four years on the staff at St Nicholas Hospice Care and around 10 years involved in GP training, something of which he is particularly proud.

After a gap year, the 56-year-old plans to undertake some volunteer work and spend more time on gardening and home improvement.

On his retirement, Dr Masters said: “It’s come a little bit quicker than I had planned but it just seemed the right time, what with all the changes in the NHS.”

Today, staff at the surgery held a farewell ceremony for Dr Masters, presenting the father-of-three with gifts which included a watering can and spade.

Dr Masters said: “I have enjoyed my time here, especially the patient contact, but it’s frustrating having the external pressures from politicians and the like.”

“I’m sad to be leaving my colleagues but I feel that I’m leaving my patients with a new breed of young doctors.”

Fellow doctor Robert Bradley said: “It’s very regretful that he’s leaving. He’s been a very good, stimulating colleague. He’s got a great sense of humour as well.”

Practice manager Paul Rayner said: “Jonathan has been with us for a number of years and, I’ve only just arrived, but it’s blatantly obvious that he’s been a stalwart to the practice. He’s got many years experience and he’s guided me into my transition here as a practice manager fantastically well. He’ll be sadly missed by his patients, the staff and everybody.

“Bringing in new young doctors is always good - fresh blood, fresh ideas, fresh ways of doing things - and the practice will move forward with new young people coming in and taking over.”
