Building work on track at historic house

The £30,000 refurbishment of Stowmarket’s historic Milton House is on schedule according to the town council’s clerk.

The John Milton Room, which acts as a ceremony room for weddings and civil ceremonies as well as the town council’s meeting chamber, was last decorated 20 years ago and had become badly dilapidated.

Town clerk David Blackburn said the windows were being held up by bricks and the wood around the windows was rotting away.

He said: “The room was well overdue a makeover.

“It had a shabby-chic look to it so money has been used to improve it greatly.

“We have been able to get considerable grant funding for the refurbishment.

“It is now coming near to the end of the project and we are delighted by it.”

Mr Blackburn said the rooms were on track to be completed in three weeks.

The makeover was funded by grants from Suffolk County Council, Mid Suffolk District Council and the town council.

Michelle Marshall, Deputy town clerk, who project managed the refurbishment said: “From the moment I first entered the John Milton Room seven years ago, I could see it was in need of renovation and I am delighted we have been able to carry out such an extensive improvement of the room.

“The carpet had faded, cracks were appearing in the walls, the wooden window frames were rotting and the decor had become outdated.

“The town council had received feedback from couples saying that they loved the building and the grounds but that the room itself was not up to scratch and they would not wish to get married there.

“This is an excellent example of collaborative working between local authorities.

“Without the financial support from the district and county council this project would not have been realised.”

The John Milton Room will be available for weddings and civil ceremonies.
