Broadband contract goes to BT
NORFOLK County Council has made BT the provider of its new broadband infrastructure.
Members of the council’s cabinet approved BT’s proposal to deliver its Better Broadband initiative at a meeting on Monday.
BT won through after a tender process which saw 43 expressions of interest.
The council was awarded £15.44 million by the Government last year, matching that with £15 million of its own money to go towards the project.
It is hoped that open infrastructure will allow internet service providers (ISPs) to deliver broadband services to residents and businesses in the county.
This will enable 83 per cent of premises in the county to access speeds in excess of 24 Mbps by June 2015 and all premises to have at least 2 Mbps, according to the council.
All customers will also have the choice of at least two ISPs, in order to drive competition.
It also expects the revamp to generate 1,337 jobs over 10 years and £88 million a year by 2021/22.
