Britain’s best burger is Benson’s in Bury St Edmunds
The best burger in Britain is made and served in Bury St Edmunds.
The winners of the National Pub Food Challenge, run by the Morning Advertiser, have been announced today.
And Benson Blakes in St Johns Street has been named the winner of the Britain’s best burger category.
A quick bite to eat at Benson’s and it was easy to see why.
The Benson’s team use meat from Meat Inn just around the corner in Brentgovel Street, while they also spent two week’s perfecting the bun with bakers at Gastrono-me across the road in St John’s Street.
“Most places just stick a burger in a bun but the bun is about fifty per cent of it so you have got to get it right,” said Tim Blake who runs the businsess.
Their burgers are full of flavour, lightly cooked, and in Tim’s own words ‘As close to 100 per cent beef as you can get’. Only herbs, salt, pepper, parsley and eggs are added.
The result, to paraphrase Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction, is ‘One Tasty burger’. Our photographer Helen Whitcombe has just returned from a trip to the United States. and said it was easily better than any of the burgers she was served there.
Benson’s also run a regular burger of the month.
This month is Captain Bulgaria a speciality by one of Benson’s two main chefs Vlad Todorov who celebrates his birthday this month and who has come up with an invention which pays a nod to his native country.
Benson’s will also be celebrating its tenth anniversary this summer.
