Brenda wins by-election seat

A COUNCILLOR has vowed to ‘do things right’ after romping to victory in a district council election.

Brenda Canham, 61, took nearly half the votes as she won the Thetford-Abbey seat for Breckland Council last Thursday.

She put her win down to her high profile in Thetford.

“A lot of people know me and they know I am not there to fight for my cause, I am there to fight for their cause.”

Cllr Canham will now occupy the seat vacated by Pauline Quadling, who stepped down in July.

She took 334 votes out of 681, with a turnout of 16.8 per cent.

Her nearest rival was Roy Brame, who took 128 votes.

Breckland’s focus needs to be on improving conditions on Thetford’s estates before worrying about new developments, according to Cllr Canham.

“We have to got to get all the estates up to scratch.

“It’s fine to build up a lovely new estate, but what about the ones we have already?” she said.

Having served as a town councillor, Cllr Canham said her new role would give her more access to the ‘right people’.

“Being a town councillor, you don’t know the contacts and once you are on Breckland, you know who can take care with certain issues.”

A by-election for a seat on Thetford Town Council was won by Mike Brindle. Cllr Brindle is a Norfolk county councillor and has previously served on the town council.
