Brandon bypass is ‘chance of a lifetime’
Brandon residents who want a bypass cannot miss out on a ‘chance of a lifetime’, according to a prospective developer.
Giles de Lotbiniere, of Brandon Hall Farm, told the town council on Monday night that a consortium of landowners were on the brink of drawing up plans for a relief road combined with 2,000 homes for the west of the town.
With bodies including Norfolk and Suffolk County Councils and Breckland and Forest Heath district councils backing the plans, the town has an ideal opportunity, according to Mr de Lotbiniere.
“We have been able to persuade them that this is not just a relief road but an opportunity for Brandon to grow.
“If we miss our slot this time, we might never see it in our lifetime,” he said.
Mr de Lotbiniere said the first plans for a relief road had surfaced almost 30 years ago, with repeated attempts since to get the project off the ground.
But with work beginning on the dualling of the A11, the attention could now turn to Brandon, he said.
The project would include 2,000 homes built over the next 20 years, with improvements to the level crossing to the north of the town.
Nearly £23 million has been raised, with Suffolk County Council providing £10 million, the Government putting up £5 million, Network Rail £1 million and the group of landowners stumping up £7 million.
Issues regarding the stone curlew have also been resolved with Natural England, according to Mr de Lotbiniere.
An application should be entered this summer.
Mr de Lotbiniere promised residents that historic footpaths, sewage works and access to the industrial estates would all be taken into account in the plans.
He also said there would be efforts made to prohibit HGVs going through the town centre once the road was built.
