Boss cites ‘Savile effect’ for tax rises

The Jimmy Savile scandal has made the public more willing to contact the police about abuse, according to Norfolk’s police and crime commissioner.

Stephen Bett said the rise in reports meant his force were putting more cash towards its vulnerable people’s unit - meaning a £3.65 per household increase in Council Tax was necessary.

Ten more frontline staff will be hired for the unit.

Mr Bett said: “People are happy to come forward and talk to police because of what happened with the Jimmy Savile case.

“Because people have come forward other victims have felt confident to come forward and Norfolk Police are making allegations and accusations and we are trying to follow them all up.

“That is the main reason that the Council Tax is going up. We are putting 10 new officers in the vulnerable people’s unit.”

A Band D household in Norfolk will pay £200.79 a year towards policing in 2013/14.
