Borrett set for Norfolk top job

Bill Borrett has been elected as leader of the Conservative group at Norfolk County Council.

Cllr Borrett, who represents the Elmham and Mattishall ward, had been serving as acting leader following the resignation of Derrick Murphy.

Group members made their pick after a secret ballot, which closed yesterday.

In a statement, he said: “I am honoured delighted to have my colleagues’ trust, confidence and support to lead the Conservative Group.

“The Conservative adminstration at Norfolk County Council has an incredibly strong track record - we have saved the authority £105 million since 2009 and are due to save another £34 million this year.

“We have frozen Council Tax for three years in a row and protected critical, front line services, such as education, social care services, highways and libraries.

“I look forward to continuing to build on his strength and to take the group forward in the elections in May, where we will stand on our record.”

He is now almost certain to become leader of the county council, and will be recommended for the position at an extraordinary meeting of the council on Monday.
