Bingo players in Mildenhall have gambled on the right numbers being called at St John’s Community Centre for the last time.

Cries of ‘Bingo’ have been heard at the ageing community centre for 40 years. However yesterday the famous call rang around the hall for the last time

Peggy Murchie, 72, of Trinity Avenue, Mildenhall, is caller for The Heath club.

She said: “Everybody said they are going to miss it, I am as well - we hope to start again once it’s rebuilt it’s been going on a long while.”

St John’s Community Centre, in St John’s Close, is used by both The Heath Club and Mildenhall Community Association to hold weekly bingo sessions, however the centre will soon close.

The closure of the centre poses a threat to the clubs, which are already struggling to recruit committee members.

Mrs Murchie said the centre needs updating, recalling times when Bingo was played to the sound of rain dripping through the ceiling. However she is concerned about the loss of an important community hub.

She said: “The community centre is the only available building this end of the town there’s nothing for people do down this end - it’s a shame.”

Orbit Housing has submitted a planning application which, if approved, will see the community centre rebuilt as part of a new housing project in St John’s Close.
