Bells ring out for the Olympics
Judy Vincent hosts a bell ringing breakfast party to mark the start of the Olympics. Holst Judy Vincent with Johnathan Clarke, Elizabeth Hollingsworth, Valentina Creffield,6, Rube Decent, 7, Tom Decent and Tracey Decent ring their bells for three minuets - part of a national bell ringing event at 8.12 where bells will be rung for three minutes all over the country.
FOR three minutes, bells chimed across the country to mark the start of London 2012.
Bellringers from St Mary’s Church, Bury St Edmunds, joined the festivities and rang their bells at 8.12am last Friday.
The group had composed a special routine which began and ended with five fireings, where the bells are rung together to make the loudest noise possible.
Bellringer Amanda Scott said: I think it was good for the community spirit it’s just nice to get together and do something.”
Judy Vincent, of Northgate Street, Bury, invited friends and family to a breakfast party where they rang bells of all sizes, from small Tibetan bells to a large, old school bell.
Two of Judy’s grandchildren also joined in the fun over Skype and speakerphone.
Judy said: “We were completely unmusical we just rung away as loud as we could for three minutes.
“It was brilliant we had a lovely time.”
The bells were also rung at St Andrew’s Church, Great Finborough, where 30 people gathered in the bell tower and church to ring bells for three minutes.
The simultaneous ringing of bells across the country was the brainchild of Turner Prize-winning artist and musician Martin Creed.
Mr Creed asked people to ring bells as loudly and quickly as they could for three minutes to mark the start of the Olympic Games.
