Battered and bruised – businesses rise to the challenge for St Nicholas Hospice
Going Ape: The Towergate challenge
THE names of the businesses that have done the most to raise cash for St Nicholas Hospice Care in Bury St Edmunds will be revealed at a ceremony tomorrow night.
Firms have been busy trying to come up with innovative and fun ways of raising money as part of the Towergate Accumulator Challenge.
There was plenty of monkeying around – and bruising – as a group from Ensors, Barclays Bank, Barker Storey Matthews, Moat Garden Nursery, All Manor of Events and Propono PR took to an ‘extreme’ challenge at Go Ape in Thetford Forest.
The group raised more than £1,000, taking on a ‘frightening’ Tarzan swing through the treetops and challenging rope climbs and crossings.
Matt Moss from Ensors who organised the event on Thursday said: “What better way to raise money for a good cause than by testing your fear of heights or in some cases extreme fear of heights.”
Laura Welham-Halstead from Propono PR, who took part in the event, added: “I think we all ended the course a bit battered, bruised and covered in bark, but with big smiles on our faces!”
While they get over the bruises, staff at Abbeycroft Leisure are waiting for their hair to grow back. Chief executive Warren Smyth, general manager Simon Ginders-Coxshall, and Bury Leisure Centre duty managers Martin Hewitson and Carl Deeks all had parts of their anatomy waxed in the name of charity on Monday last week.
And on Saturday skaters at Curve Motion in Bury were presented with certificates following its annual skateathon in July which raised more than £2,000.
Last year’s skateathon saw Curvemotion win the accumulator challenge.
The occasion was particularly poignant for 42 year old CurveMotion DJ Richard Pettitt from Wickhambrook, who was inspired to take part in the event as his mother, Jeanette, received care from the Hospice.
Sadly, she has since lost her battle with Motor Neurone Disease.
Speaking at Saturday’s presentation, Richard said: “The work the Hospice does in supporting both patients and their families in this difficult time is so important and I was keen to play my part in supporting what they do.”
