August rain stayed away
AUGUST was drier than average, however the respite was not enough to prevent the summer being the wettest since 2004.
Alan Messem, who records rainfall in Bury St Edmunds, said 38mm of rain fell on the town during August – 18mm of which fell in the first six days.
After a wet start the town’s residents enjoyed almost 18 dry days, when only 4.5mm of rain fell.
The wettest day of the month was August 25, due to thundery showers which began in the afternoon and continued into late evening.
The total rainfall for the summer was 235mm, 47 per cent above the seasonal average and the wettest summer since 2004, when 277mm fell on the town.
Since the start of the year Bury has had 496mm of rainfall, 120mm below average.
