Auction sale breaks Bury artist’s record

The sale of a painting of dogs owned by Greene King’s former brewery chief has smashed the previous record for Bury St Edmunds artist, Edward Robert Smythe.

The 1870 painting, Favourite Hounds, went for £74,987 at auction in New York yesterday, breaking the previous record of £39,650 for a Smythe work.

Smythe lived at Angel Hill during his time in Bury, painting Sir Walter Greene’s hounds during his time here.

Sir Walter was MP for Bury St Edmunds between 1900 and 1906 and lived at Nether Hall, Pakenham.

Sam Travers, 19th century art expert at Bonhams auctioneers, said: “The special thing about Favourite Hounds is the attention paid to each hound.

“Their individual characteristics are depicted in such detail and in such a variety of poses displaying the incredible skill of this fine Suffolk artist.”
