ATM security tightened after theft devices found

SECURITY has been tightened at an ATM in Lakenheath after three theft devices were discovered attached to it within two weeks.

Devices were discovered on an ATM at the Co-Operative supermarket in the town’s high street on July 31, August 1 and August 9.

A spokesperson for the Co-Operative Bank said: “The Co-operative Bank takes the protection of its customers against fraud very seriously.

“A full investigation has been carried out into the reports received in Suffolk and a protective measure has been installed to ensure no repeat incidents take place.

“The bank is continuously reviewing the level of security across the Co-operative Bank’s ATM estate and will take any necessary action to help protect customers.”

The theft devices found were thin grey plastic strips which are attached to the dispensing slot of the ATM.

Money sticks to the strip as it is dispensed allowing the thief to return later and retrieve it.

The devices were discovered after customers reported to the store’s staff that they had been dispensed the wrong amount of money following which staff examined the machine and realised it had been tampered with.

Police have said that the bank believe only one victim is still waiting to be reunited with their missing money and that the Lakenheath store’s staff are working to locate them.

It is believed all other victims were reimbursed immediately upon informing staff what had happened.

Police are seeking a man they would like to speak to in connection with the device discovered in Lakenheath on Wednesday August 1.

He is described as being in his late 20s to early 30s, around 5’ 11”, with short dark hair.

He was wearing dark blue jeans, a grey collared shirt, a black zip-up jacket and may have been driving a red van.

All ATM users have been advised by police to check machines thoroughly before using them and to alert the branch or police if they discover anything suspicious.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting crime number MH/12/1484.
