Ashtrays aim to stub it out

There's no excuse for pavements to be blighted with dropped cigarette butts anymore now two councils have joined forces to provide residents with free portable ashtrays.

Forest Heath District Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Council have come up with the initiative as part of a six-month campaign against littering, called No Excuses. Staff will be giving away the ashtrays at pubs and cafes across the district over the next two weeks, but some are already available at Forest Heath District Council's offices, in Mildenhall.

Cllr Peter Stevens, chairman of the two councils' Joint Waste Committee, said: "Some people think that as cigarette ends are so small they are quick to degrade and it doesn't matter if they leave them on the ground. In fact they are made from plastic and take 80 years to break down, and being difficult to pick up, they tend to accumulate, blocking drains and leaking contaminants."
