Artist Ned set to take centre stage

A Bury St Edmunds artist will be taking centre stage next month after securing a place on Trafalgar Square's Fourth Plinth.

Ned Pamphilon will be featuring on the plinth as part of sculptor Antony Gormley's living monument, called One & Other.

For one hour, 24 hours a day, for 100 days, a different person is making the plinth their own, 'acting as a representation of the whole of humanity'.

Mr Pamphilon, who spent 10 years living and paining in Turkey before returning to England last year, has become a well-known artist in Bury.

His recent work has included a portrait of the Queen's visit to Bury, a portrait of St Edmund and a cartoon view of the town, including the Angel Hotel, sugar beet factory and Bury Free Press offices.

He said: "To quote Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, 'A nation without art has lost one of its lifelines'. This philosophy is applicable to all communities whether national or local. I now have the opportunity to highlight my local region at London's Trafalgar Square, by simply being there."

Mr Pamphilon will be on the Fourth Plinth from midnight to 1am on October 6.
