Apprentice Charlie is one of UK’s best

A MANUFACTURER’S award and a place as a finalist in an industry award has seen a young apprentice hailed as one of the country’s best.

Charlie Golding, who works at Cecil & Larter in Bury St Edmunds, has been named as Volvo Car UK’s third year service technician apprentice of the year.

And the 20-year-old also secured a place as a finalist in the Insitute of the Motor Industry’s IMI Outstanding Achievers Awards, where he was presented with his certificate by IMI patron HRH Prince Michael of Kent.

“I have worked really hard and to be recognised in this way by the IMI against all the other technicians in the country who work for a variety of franchises, is amazing. My next goal is to become a master technician,” said Charlie.

Only last year, Charlie had been runner-up in the Volvo award.

“I was completely focused on the Volvo apprenticeship awards after coming so close last year, that being named as an IMI finalist so soon after winning the manufacturer award has come as a complete surprise,” he said.

He joined Cecil and Larter, in Mildenhall Road, in August 2008 soon after completing his GCSEs at Thurston Community College.

Charlie is now close to finishing his three-year Volvo advanced apprenticeship programme, which will see him qualify as a vehicle technician.

Mark Williams, aftersales manager at Cecil & Larter, said: “Despite being pipped at the post last year, Charlie took it upon himself to work harder and improve his already exceptional performance to win the Volvo award this year.

“And to be recognised as a finalist in the IMI national awards is an incredible achievement which is richly deserved.

“He has demonstrated a real strength of character and a determination to achieve and although he is one of the youngsest in the workshop, he has proved something of an inspiration.”
