Appeal goes out for Royal Observer Corps members

The Royal Observer Corps Association is inviting anyone who served as a a member of 4 Group ROC to join the newly reformed branch No 4 Group (Colchester) ROCA.

The Royal Observer Corps served as air craft spotters during the War but following the detonation of the first nuclear bomb the stage was set for the Cold War, a period lasting just over 40 years.

Then ROC personnel, most of whom were volunteers, took on a role of watching for nuclear blasts and potential fallout.

This role was controlled from 4 Group’s headquarters in Colchester as part of the UK Warning & Monitoring Organisation.

The posts and group HQ were stood down in 1991 at the end of the Cold War.

However a number of local branches have maintained strong comradeship and now the newly formed branch of the ROC Association is looking for members.

Family members and those interested in the Corps’ history are also welcome as associate members.
