Anglo Saxons invade in school conquest

A VILLAGE school was braced for an invasion by legions of young war-ready Anglo Saxons.
More than 30 pupils in Year 3 and 4 at Barningham Primary School created costumes and makeshift weapons based on the historic settlers for a wealth of fun-filled end of term activities.
Joined by a re-enactor from history workshop group Portals to the Past, they enjoyed Anglo Saxon story telling, a quiz and even a batttle.
Class teacher Diane Steer said: “They thoroughly enjoyed it and there were some really impressive costumes. Everyone made swords and shields.
“It was a really positive way to bring the learning alive.”
BUDDING business leaders from St Benedict’s Catholic School, in Bury, triumphed at the first ever East Anglia Enterprise Challenge.
Year 10 students Emily Vango, Ellie Vickers, Laura Wardop and Katherine Greenwell went head to head with five other schools from the region at the contest at the City College, in Norwich, to market an alternative 2012 Olympic torch and suggest an environmentally friendly route.
Ellie said: “We came up with the idea of a globe held by two hands, one representing Suffolk and the other Norfolk. Each of the five Olympic ring colours would represent a different local business, for example green would be sponsored by Greene King and yellow would be sponsored by Colman’s Mustard.”
NUMERACY whizzes at St Louis Catholic Middle, in Bury, achieved seven gold, 24 silver and 37 bronze awards in this year’s UKMT Junior Maths Challenge.
Year 8 pupil Liam Dance was best in school while Drew McNally was the best in Year 7.
The challenge is run by the UK Mathematics Trust and sat in schools by Years 7 and 8.
PUPILS at Tollgate Primary, in Bury, were graced with a touch of the Olympic spirit following a visit by torch bearer Michelle Gidney. She took along her torch and answered questions from the children.
THE Nursery class at Stanton Primary had a novel approach to celebrate the London 2012 Games with their first Teddy Bear Olympics. The children took part in three events – the Magic Path Challenge, Climbing Challenge and Tyre Challenge.
