A man, who battled with his weight after health problems forced him to give up sport, has become a Slimming World consultant.

Alan Corley, 40, was diagnosed with leukaemia when he was six-years-old. He underwent several high dose rounds of chemotherapy and, after a bone marrow transplant from his younger sister, eventually overcame the disease.

Then, five years ago, he found out the prolonged treatment he had received had resulted in him having degeneration of the vertebrae.

He was advised by a doctor to stop participating in the contact sports which he loved, including rugby, mountain biking and martial arts, and from then on watched helplessly as his weight ‘ballooned’.

He said: “My eating was relatively unhealthy and, taking out the exercise, my weight started going up. At that point my doctor advised that I had to lose weight.”

After reaching 17 stone, Mr Corley, from Barrow, decided to heed his doctor’s advice.

He said: “Like a lot of slimmers, I tried following numerous diets by myself but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate.

“I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet.”

Now, almost three stone lighter and an inspiration to his friends and family, Mr Corley has started a new career by becoming Slimming World’s first male consultant in the Bury St Edmunds area.

His first group was scheduled to take place last night at Barrow Primary School, where they will continue to take place every Thursday at 7.30pm.

“I’d like to inspire everybody to get on to this way of living because it’s so easy, but I’d especially like to encourage more guys to do it because men do think ‘I don’t want to cross that threshold because it’s females in there and it’s intimidating’,” said Mr Corley.

To join his group, call him on 01284 811369.
