Airman named as victim of fatal road collision
AN AMERICAN airman from RAF Lakenheath has been named as the victim of a fatal road collision on May 28.
Airman 1st Class Jeremy Smithers suffered fatal injuries after his motorbike was involved in a collidsion with a lorry on the eastbound carriageway of the A14, near Cambridge, at 12.35pm.
Amn Smithers, 22, had been serving with the 48th Force Support Squadron based at Lakenheath since September 2012.
He was unmarried, however, he is believed to have been involved in a relationship with a woman who lived locally to the base.
Colonel Kyle W Robinson, wing commander of the 48th Fighter Wing, said: “Amn Smithers was a valued member of the 48th Fighter Wing.
“His loss will be felt across our Liberty Wing community and we will work to provide untiring support and assistance to his family and friends during this difficult time.”
Col Robinson asked the community at RAF Lakenheath to remember Amn Smithers and his family in their prayers.
The 50 year-old male driver of the lorry involved in the collision has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
He has been released on police bail until July 26.
RAF Lakenheath has said that Amn Smither’s body is currently on its way back to his parents, who have also worked for the United States Air Force, in America.
The United States Air Force based at RAF Lakenheath is planning to hold a memorial service for Amn Smithers at the end of June.
