Adult learner inspires others
Leap centre open day Gillian chandler
ENROLLING in an adult education course gave Gillian Chandler the confidence to win her fight against depression.
When she entered the Leap Centre in Mildenhall in February this year, Gillian had never switched on a computer.
Since then, she has completed three courses in computing and been named runner-up for Leap’s over-65 learner of the year award.
Gillian, 69, of Lakenheath went back to the Mildenhall Leap Centre, run by West Suffolk College, last Friday to share her experiences with others considering enrolling.
She said: “I had never used a computer before – it was a real, big effort to come here. I was shaking, a nervous wreck, but I actually did it.”
Gillian now regularly checks Facebook, tweets and emails relatives overseas.
She said the achievement had given her the confidence she needed to fight depression.
Leap offers courses including English, maths and IT as well as glass painting and appointments with career advisers who can help with advice on CV writing and interview techniques.
