A village with a bright future
Picturesque Pakenham ‘s landscape is dominated by two historic mills however the village itself is constantly evolving.
A popular location for tourists, there are many sights to turn heads in the village, not purely the working water mill and windmill that make the village unique.
Large topiary sculptures by artist, Steve Manning, which have featured on Blue Peter, on stage with Oasis and in major television adverts and can often be seen in the village’s fields.
Henry Painter, Pakenham Parish Council chairman, said: “It’s a wonderful place to be, a very caring place, which has a very good community.
“A nice mixture of attractive buildings and nice people.”
Pakenham is a thriving village home to many clubs and organisations as well as an increasing number of amenities.
The village hall with adjoining shop was opened about 10-years-ago, following a lottery grant.
Allotments were also opened following requests from local people and more recently the parish council has acquired a piece of woodland.
However despite these advancements villagers have been anxious since the village’s only pub, The Fox, closed in November 2011.
Owner Vince Somers has confirmed that he intends to reopen the pub, which will incorporate a restaurant, and said a planning application is in the process of being drawn up.
Among the village’s many clubs is the WI, who are regularly visited by a variety of interesting speakers and help to arrange events in the village.
Pakenham WI has a colourful past, which includes a 2010 trip to America to make English tea in Dallas, a tale which has since been published.
A new newsletter detailing all Pakenham’s groups and events plans to publish its first edition in Febuary.
It will be a collaboration between the Church and the parish council who have responded to the wishes of local residents expressed during a recent parish poll.
All the village’s organisations will have the opportunity to have articles published in the newsletter, which will be delivered free of charge to every household.
