A taste of life in wartime Suffolk
Countryside at War event at Museum of East Anglian Life
THE Museum of East Anglian Life invited visitors to take a trip back in time last weekend – to discover what life was like in the countryside during World War Two.
More than 400 people visited the museum on September 16 to take part in its first ever Countryside at War event. Visitors could join in with bayonet- practice, grenade throwing, 1940s cooking and rationing, visit a wartime printing press, learn what to do when an air raid siren goes off and even discover some wartime beauty tips.
World War Two veterans and evacuees were also on hand to tell their stories of what it was like in wartime East Anglia.
The museum’s learning officer Jo Rooks said: “It is a bit of an untold story. We had all sorts of things to show what it was like in countryside during the war.
“I loved the areas people could have a go at things, hands on.
“It was a fantastic day.
“We were very happy with how many people turned up as it is the first time we have put on this event.
“We had lots of school children visit the museum – they were very enthusiastic.
“We hope to run the event next year, too – but make it even bigger.”
