A long weekend of royal festivities

WHEN Lesley and Gary Morley decorated their house in West Row, they were continuing a family tradition dating back to the coronation.

The two shields above the Morleys’ front door were made for the Queen’s coronation in 1952 by Gary’s father, Walter.

Walter was a local councillor, JP and founder of Morley’s Grey Coaches, who died in 1982.

The shields have been put up to celebrate every royal event since then, including the silver and gold jubilees and last year’s royal wedding.

Lesley and Gary decorate the two shields with appropriate pictures each time.

The couple have also decorated their house with Christmas lights and lots of bunting.

Lesley said: “If you’ve got a special occasion, you celebrate it.”

The Jubilee weekend was celebrated enthusiastically across Mildenhall and Lakenheath with many people dressing up in red, white and blue and heading to one of the many street parties and events that took place.

Events included picnics, barn dances and presentations of mugs and coins to school-children.
