A first glimpse inside highly anticipated pub
'The Corn Exchange' Wetherspoons is near completion in Bury St Edmunds
THIS is the first glimpse of Bury St Edmunds’ highly anticipated Wetherspoon pub.
Work is nearly complete on the new venue in the town’s historic Corn Exchange, which has been brought back to life following a £1.6 million investment by the pub giant.
The building’s unique history has been preserved in a design which champions original features while adding a modern touch.
Unit manager Craig Uttley said: “When you come across a building of this magnitude the aim is to try and keep as much of the original features. It’s a stunning building and we wanted to preserve it.
“For people in Bury, this building means a lot to them. Our aim was to give it that wow factor.

“I think they will be extremely pleased with what we’ve done.”
Architects RJD have rejuvenated the 1960s wooden flooring and created 1860s-style light fittings, which are based on original designs found in the Corn Exchange.
Columns have also been a preserved, the heating system restored and reflective protective covers placed on the panoramic glass roof. The artwork also celebrates the history of the building and town.
The pub, which will still be known as the Corn Exchange, has 240 seats with a capacity for about 750 people.

It will employ about 80 staff with 65 of those recruited last week and some vacancies yet to be filled.
The pub will open on Tuesday, June 5, at 9am.
