80s pop star to open beer festival

Eighties pop icon Tony Hadley, of Spandau Ballet, will be in Bury St Edmunds next week to launch the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) East Anglian Beer Festival.

The event, which starts on Wednesday at Bury Corn Exchange and will run until Saturday, will see more than 90 local ales and ciders on offer.

Ale fans will be able to sup on old favourites such as Adnam's, Ridley's and Greene King, as well as other names such as Mighty Oak, Humpty Dumpty, Milton and Wolf in third, half or full pints, while designated drivers can enjoy free soft drinks.

Kevin Waterson, chairman of the West Suffolk branch of Camra, said: "The East Anglian Beer Festival really is the highlight of the Camra calendar and people come from all over the country to try the great ales made in this region.

"I am delighted Tony Hadley, who is involved with Red Rat Craft Brewery, in Troston, will open the festival.

"The event will be raising money for King's College Hospital, in London, in response to the story we saw in the Bury Free Press about Andrea Cobbold and Tara Sturman's children, who were treated there, as well as St Nicholas' Hospice."

The festival will be open from noon to 11pm daily.
