Some of Suffolk’s iconic species will find their specialist habitats extended following a £400,000 land purchase by Lakenheath Fen.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) reserve has purchased 59 acres of arable farm land to the north of the Little Ouse river, which it will revert into grazing marsh and reedbeds.

Dave Rogers, reserve site manager, said: “This exciting addition to the reserve will allow us to recreate habitat in the Fens, where only 2 per cent of the original wetland remains.”

The £400,000 purchase was funded by RSPB members from across the UK.

Lakenheath Fen is home to many rare species including 11 per cent of the UK’s breeding female bitterns.
