SOUTHGATE Community Association held a tearful send off for their administrator, who has retired after 34 years in the job.
Jane Thompson, 75, was presented with flowers at her retirement celebration at the Southgate Community Centre in Bury St Edmunds.
For 34 years Jane has kept the centre, which hosts everything from keep fit sessions to wedding receptions, running smoothly.
Jane said she was looking forward to spending time with her family in her retirement.
She said: “We have had our ups and downs over the years but it has been a lovely experience working here. When I started I was given an old style typewriter and a telephone to work with.
“In the years since, we have gone from strength to strength – the centre is still the heart of the community.
“We have three children and five grandchildren so I hope to spend lots of time with them now in my retirement.”
Southgate Commuynity Association trustee Peter Boyt said: “Jane has been pivotal to the success of the centre, we would not have got this far without her contribution.
“She knows the place like the back of her hand and has helped to make it as successful as it is.”
