Fire crews had to call for Ixworth’s High Street to be closed last night while they dealt with a fire in a barn containing chemicals.
Initially two crews, from Bury St Edmunds and Ixworth, attended at about 7.50pm but then called for the help of another crew and an aerial appliance when the fire spread to the roof at about 8.40pm.
A Suffolk Fire Service spokeswoman said the quantity and type of chemicals were unknown and they called for the road to be closed in case smoke from them drifted across it.
The fire was under control just after 10pm but crews were damping down until after 11pm.
Suffolk Police said it was closed from the A143 to Ixworth Road. A police spokeswoman said this morning that it was not yet clear if the cause of the fire was suspicious.
